Phineas

Phineas (Finny) is a student at Devon School in New Hampshire during the World War II. He is around the age of 16 and weighs 150 pounds. Finny is five feet eight and a half inches tall with green eyes and for being the best athlete in the school, he wasn't spectacularly built. His weight flowed from his legs to torso around shoulders to arms and full strong neck in an uninterrupted, unemphatic unity of strength (Knowles 16). Finny is Gene Forrester's closest friend and roommate at Devon. He is the "leader" of the group of boys in the "Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session" and an extraordinary athlete. He broke a swimming record at Devon and even invents a new ball game called “blitzkrieg”.

Symbolism: I think that Finny symbolizes a faithful and loyal dog. Dogs are usually the most outgoing and dependable pets and they love taking chances or risks. They aren’t the smartest animals but they love being outdoors and playing sports. Finny is very trustworthy and devoted friend who is willing to cover up his friend’s mistake which cost him so much. In addition, Finny loves to take big risks and challenges almost everything that he sees. He’s very straightforward like a dog that only looks at the one prize instead of everything around him. He is a sports guy and so he loves being outside and relaxing or doing something and he is rarely ever very quiet or keeping to himself like Gene who resembles a cat.

Analysis: Finny is very good at being able to persuade or sweet-talk people into getting what he wants them to do. For example, “Mr. Patch-Withers’ laughter surprised us all, including himself. Phineas was very happy; sour and stern Mr. Patch-Withers had been given a good laugh for once, and he had done it! He broke into the charmed, thoughtless grin of a man fulfilled” (Knowles 28). Finny is gifted in his speech and so he is able to charm all those who talk with him. Even the leaders of the Devon School excuse Phineas of everything because they are so surprised and overwhelmed at his ability to talk so smoothly and undoubtedly good. Another character trait of Finny is that he is like an athlete that can never stay still or be locked up. “The he slowly looked around at the others with the expression of dazed determination he used when the object was to carry people along with his latest idea. Blitzkrieg….or just blitzball…” (Knowles 37). Something is constantly inside his mind and he usually follows up on it. Phineas loves to take risks and chances that no one else would take and his ideas are beyond crazy. Gene says that “The tree was tremendous, an irate, steely black steeple beside the river. I was damned if I’d climb it. The hell with it. No one but Phineas could think up such a crazy idea” (Knowles 14). Phineas is a big risk-taker and finds fun in exotic things.

Theme: Friendship is a big and important theme throughout the novel. The author shows two different types of friendship and Finny supports the type that is loyal and trustworthy who will not betray his friend. Phineas truly cares for his friend and wants the best for his friend even if he is hurting himself. Finny refuses to believe and see that Gene had purposely pushed him off the tree. He also supports this theme that a friend should love a friend for who they are. I think Phineas portrays this part when he says to Gene”I believe you. Its okay because I understand and I believe you. You’ve already shown me and I believe you” (Knowles 191). He is able to see the true feeling of guilt that Gene has been carrying and although he himself is hurt, he is able to forgive Gene and still loves him as a friend.
